Sometimes the truth is darker than fiction.

Liza Jones has thirty days to write the thriller that could put her back on the bestseller list. In the meantime, she’s struggling to start a family with her husband,

who is distracted by the disappearance of his best friend, Nick. With stresses weighing down in both her professional and her personal life, Liza escapes into writing her latest heroine.

Beth is a new mother who suspects her husband is cheating on her while she’s home alone providing for their newborn.

Angry and betrayed, Beth sets out to catch him in the act and make him pay for shattering the illusion of their perfect life. But before she realizes it, she’s tossing the body of her husband’s mistress into the river.

Then the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur. Nick’s body is dragged from the Hudson and Liza’s husband is arrested for his murder.

Before her deadline is up, Liza will have to face up to the truths about the people around her, including herself. If she doesn’t, the end of her heroine’s story could be the end of her own

My review :

I got a copy of this book through NetGalley

This is my beginning in the world of thriller/suspense . This is the second book i read after Gone girl and i think i’m falling in love with this genre .

This book was a story of a murder case , in this story we follow a writer liz with her very own story about another murder case staring her heroin Beth , at first it was a bit confusing to switch between the two stories,at some points i was wondering about which person i’m reading about, but after a couple of pages i started enjoying it more and found it way easier .

This felt like the movie ” Cat woman” , with Liza being patience phillips the normal everyday person , and Beth being the Catwoman .

As the story went on i was just waiting for Beth‘s chapters to come , i loved her , she started of as a weak personality and developed to a strong fiery wicked woman , too much sass and confidence that i enjoyed and got me hooked to her story.

so when i read Liz‘s chapters i was very angry at times and frustrated with her , i wanted her to be like the woman she’s writing about , her obsessions with babies and having a “perfect family” no matter what annoyed me at times . Until the revelation at the end , only then did i start understanding her and be more drawn to her chapters .

after the revelations i started seeing the lines between reality and imagination blurring, the real life of Liz and the fiction of Beth started interweaving , Liz became as i wanted her to be throughout the entire story.

Now about the revelation , as i was reading , i was very sure that i knew the killer , i even praised myself for figuring it out at the beginning . but the thing about this writer is that she kept throwing me off !

whenever i pin the identity of the guilty person , she adds some detail or some kind of new evidence that makes me change my mind and suspect others . by the near end of the story i was probably done changing my suspects and was finally finished accusing almost every character in the story ( i would make a horrible detective i know )

This book doesn’t have a steady pace , at first it was a bit slow but not in a bad way , before the second part the pace started picking up and things became more thought-provoking . there were many twists and turns and many characters changed and developed or perhaps just showed their true selves .

The ending reminded me of Gone girl , not sure if it’s because it was a bit similar or because it’s the only other thriller book i have read .

I enjoyed this story and i would definitely pick up more thriller books , i would highly recommend this book !

  1. def adding to my TBR even though it does sound like it may be a tad bit confusing, I’m still intrigued. Great review, I haven’t read very many Thrillers either (really need to read Gone Girl *sobs*) but I’m making a list for the Fall which is my fave season for them. Glad to see you enjoyed this one 🙂
